Moral injury has been described as the psychological injury that occurs when we experience a profound transgression of our moral framework. We run the risk of moral injury when we participate in or fail to prevent acts we know to be wrong, or feel our moral framework has been betrayed by systems and individuals with more power than ourselves.

For many of our families, and for the young people living in foster, adoptive, and kinship placements with our families, the experience of moral injury is a regular occurrence. In this webinar, we will take a deeper look at this concept, the factors that increase our risk of exposure, and strategies we can put to use for ourselves and with the families with whom we work, to confront and heal this profoundly destructive experience.

Michelle D Seymore, MPNA, has focused her efforts toward equity by working to reduce disparities in Child Protection. Seymore started her career in child protection case management. This role gave direction to her public service career, and she remains committed to identifying systemic barriers and bias policies impacting families as a Hennepin County Manager. Additionally, through a collaboration with the University of MN and the Child Welfare training academy, Seymore writes curriculum and trains child welfare professionals in compliance with the governing MN statutes. With over 15 years of child protection experience, she remains passionate and committed to the work.

Ed Morales, MPP, MSW, LICSW, is a trainer and social worker based in Minneapolis, MN.
