Welcome to The Acorn! Each month we share the latest trainings, data, and resources available to child welfare professionals throughout Minnesota.

Look for us at the MSSA Conference!
If you plan to attend the Minnesota Social Service Association 129th Annual Training Conference and Expo from March 16-18, stop by our table! Staff from the Training Academy will be available to answer your questions, demonstrate the new Training Portal, and pass out a few giveaways!
 
Training
The courses below are now available for registration through the Minnesota Child Welfare Training Academy (MNCWTA) Training Portal. The login is available on our website - www.mnchildwelfaretraining.com - in the top-right navigation, then select the Training Catalog, where you will find a course description and links to register.

Workers: If you do not yet have a Training Portal account, ask your supervisor to send you an invitation.

Supervisors and Tribal Leaders: If you do not yet have a Training Portal account, follow the instructions in this email. To invite your employees, and/or to assign new workers to a Child Welfare Foundations Training, follow the instructions in this email.

Training for New Workers Only
Child Welfare Foundations Training (CWTA X100)
This training is assigned by a supervisor or tribal leader. Participants must be able to attend all dates/times. At this time we anticipate the following Cohort will be in person; we will notify registrants if that changes.

  • Classroom 1: May 10-12 (9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.)
  • ICWA/MIFPA Training: May 24-25 (9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.)
  • Classroom 2: June 7-9 (9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.)
  • SSIS Classroom 2 Lab: June 14 (9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) Online*
  • Classroom 3: June 28-30 (9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.)
  • SSIS Classroom 3 Lab: July 7 (9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) Online*
  • Classroom 4: July 26-28 (9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.)
*SSIS Labs will be held online.

Attendance

Our class sizes tend to be small and we often have a waiting list. Trainees who miss more than 30 minutes of any given training will not receive CEUs; for required training you will need to repeat the entire course.

Log in here under "I have a University Internet Account" using your UMN guest account. In the left navigation, click My Enrollment History, scroll to the course you wish to drop and select Request Drop (you will need to select a reason for dropping the class). Then select Submit to process the request. If you need to drop a course on or after the course start date, complete the Help & Support Form on our Contact Us page.

SSIS Mentor Coffee Talk: Statewide Release v22.1
New mentor coffee talk webinars have been added to the SSIS events calendar for 2022. The next talk will cover Grids and General Reports in SSIS, and will take place on Tuesday, March 15 from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. Registration is required for each session and will close one hour prior to the event. Webinars will be recorded and posted for future reference. A full schedule can be found here.

DHS Permanency Training Opportunities

Duluth ACEs: Rising Above Adversity, Building a Community of Resilience

Learn more about Duluth ACEs, a day-long, virtual summit on March 26 that will shed light on the impacts and best-practices for supporting people who have experienced developmental, generational, and complex trauma. Dr. Bruce D. Perry, M.D., Ph.D., world-renowned trauma expert and coauthor with Oprah Winfrey of “What Happened to You: Conversations on Trauma,” will provide the keynote address in the morning, followed by smaller, break-out sessions hosted by experts in the Neurosequential Network. $10 (scholarships available).

CASCW two day conference supporting collaborative birth and foster parent relationships in child welfare april 20 9-12 and April 21 1-4

2022 CASCW Annual Spring Conference: Supporting Collaborative Birth and Foster Parent Relationships in Child Welfare
This year’s virtual CASCW conference featuring speakers and panelists as they explore how child welfare workers can best facilitate and support birth and foster parent relationships to improve outcomes for children and families. The audience will learn current strategies and best practices from those with professional and personal experience. April 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and April 21 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Learn more and register here.

 
Nominations Open for 2022 Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare (CASCW) Awards

In connection with CASCW's 2022 Spring Conference, you are invited to nominate those in the Minnesota child welfare community who demonstrate a commitment to engaging families, engagement in strengths-based work with families, a focus on reducing disparities in the child welfare system, and utilization of research-supported practice.

Child Welfare Exemplary Service Award image
Nominate Minnesota county and tribal child welfare supervisors and frontline workers for the Child Welfare Exemplary Service Award. Nomination examples for this award might include child protection social workers, county or tribal supervisors, county or tribal children's mental health, dependency, or permanency workers.

Outstanding Service Partner in Child Welfare Award image
Nominate frontline professionals working in a variety of fields for the Outstanding Service Partner in Child Welfare Award. This award recognizes Minnesota child welfare workers in private child-serving agencies, community agencies, schools, for outstanding service to children and families. Nomination examples for this award might include but are not limited to: community social workers, school social workers, Guardians Ad Litem, private agency foster care and adoption workers, and many others.

Child Welfare Workforce Wellness

The best way to thrive during these trying times is to find ways to take care of yourself. Following are several options that may be helpful:
  • In the article What to Do About Self-Care Fatigue, Columbia University Irving Medical Center spoke with Lourival Baptista-Neto, MD, on what to do when you’re just plain tired of hearing about self-care.
  • The Minnesota Association of County Social Service Administrators (MACSSA) has a number of Child Wellbeing Resources on their website. Check it out!
